Yuka Nakamura

2022-09-30 Meditation on the elements inside ourselves, Dhamma talk Part 2 on Satipaṭṭhāna: Feelings (vedana) 1:22:06
Bhante Sujato
Meditation on the elements inside ourselves. Dhamma talk Part 2 on Satipaṭṭhāna: Feelings (vedana). Satipaṭṭhāna as a "samādhinimitta", use of nimitta vs. descriptions of lights during meditation in the suttas. Anapanāsati as a another way to do Satipaṭṭhāna. Vedana as present in the breath. Pain during meditation. How the Buddha emphasised happiness during meditation (often a synonym for meditation!). Equanamity is the final stage in major lists such as the seven awakening factors, brahmavihāras.

2022-07-13 Mettā and Samādhi (Absorbed in Loving Kindness) (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 49:20
Tempel Smith
This style of meditation practice is designed to support both the strengthening of mettā (loving kindness) and samādhi (concentration). The kind and benevolent tone of the brahmavihārās (sacred dwellings) carries a deep beckoning of our hearts to be whole and steady, so these are wonderful and meaningful qualities to use for samādhi/concentration. After many days of practicing we can taste our hearts becoming whole and can better see the possibility of letting go of old habits based in greed, insecurity and hatred.

2022-07-07 Working with Hindrances to Mettā Meditation (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 49:25
Tempel Smith
As we practice mettā meditation we will have waves where the practice feels easy, intuitive and validating; and we will all have waves where we struggle. There are five very common states which visit us in meditation practice called the "five hindrances". These are commonly named in English as craving, aversion, dullness, restlessness, and doubt. For steady mettā practice our first response to these challenges is to practice more carefully with patience determination. The second response is to offer ourselves kindness and compassion during challenging times. For mettā meditation and for the other three brahmaviharas, our third response to challenging times is to turn wakefully towards the qualities of the challenge and see them as only temporary conditions. We can greatly reduce the experience of suffering in the hindrances when we have mindful experience of them.

2022-05-20 Guided death contemplation, Dhamma talk on Carrion sutta – Amaganda 1:40:22
Bhante Sujato, Bhante Akāliko
From Harris Park. Death contemplation guided by Bhante Akāliko. Dhamma talk by Bhante Sujato: Carrion sutta (Snp 2.2) Amaganda: literally "raw stench". A (presumably) hard-core vegan ascetic challenges the Buddha about his eating a cooked meal with meat. The Buddha's response: a conduct of practicing the four Brahma Viharas is what a monastic / ascetic lifestyle is about.

2021-07-12 Tuning the Heart with Gratitude 54:53
Tempel Smith
Close to the four Brahma viharas lives the heart warm with gratitude. Blending intentional gratitude into our dharma paths and to the practices which open the heart, counting our blessing of a human body, simple resources around us, and gratitude for our planet helps dispel any sense of scarcity and an over-focus on what we feel is lacking. Feeling gratitude allows us to discern if and what is truly lacking, and to be free at times to be bathed in countless miracles.

2021-02-21 Mudita - The Joyful Heart 50:41
Yuka Nakamura
Mudita means appreciative or sympathetic joy and is the third of the four Brahmaviharas, the boundless qualities of the heart and mind. It stands for our ability to appreciate and delight in what is good and beautiful in our own being and in the world. It inspires and uplifts the heart and purifies it from unwholesome states.
Bodhi College

2021-02-11 Brahma Vihara: Equanimity 51:38
James Baraz
Equanimity is the last of the 4 Brahma Viharas. It holds the other three--metta, compassion/karuna, and mudita--with spaciousness and balance. Equanimity reminds us to allow for life to unfold as it will. We can let go of control, which we never had in the first place, meeting life's up and downs with balance and the possibility of a wise, skillful response.

2021-01-12 Equanimity and Loving Our Enemies within the Framework of the Four Brahmaviharas 59:04
Kaira Jewel Lingo
The talk begins with an introduction to the Four Brahmaviharas and an exploration of how they are distinct (drawing on Ven. Analayo's sun simile). We then explore what equanimity is and how it supports metta when it comes to keeping our hearts open to those we find difficult. We also explore how equanimity helps us to stand up for what we believe in. The talk ends with a song based on a Thich Nhat Hanh poem about how to face injustice and hatred and still continue on.
