2018-09-20 Bringing wisdom and compassion to the judging mind 59:57
Sally Armstrong
Many of us have a tendency to be critical and judgmental of ourselves and others. In meditation, this habit can seem quite strong and can create a lot of suffering. But mindfulness is a wonderful tool to enable us to see these thoughts for what they are, so we can begin to bring wisdom and understanding to them. The good news is, like any conditioned habit, we can learn to decondition them.

2018-09-20 Four Stages in the Transformation of the Judgmental Mind (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 62:15
Donald Rothberg
After first reflecting on how our work with the judgmental mind connects with traditional Buddhist practice, we explore four stages in the trans-formative process connected with direct inquiry into judgments. This complements the more indirect approach of developing the heart practices and awakened qualities.

2018-09-19 Mindful of Race: Transforming Racism From The Inside Out 52:42
Ruth King
The world’s heart is on fire, and race is at its core. The bitter racial seeds from past beliefs and actions are blooming all around us, reflecting not only a division of the races that is rooted in ignorance and hate, but also, and more sorely, a division of the heart. Racism is a heart disease. How we think and respond is at the core of racial suffering and racial healing. If we cannot think clearly and respond wisely, we will continue to damage the world’s heart. In this talk, my hope is to ignite your imagination and help you discover your voice in the song of racial healing, and how we could live in this world if every one of us aimed our energy toward awakening, non-harming, generosity, and kinship—a world with race but without racism. It all begins with an examination of our habits of harm.

2018-09-18 Transforming the Judgmental Mind: An Overview (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 58:27
Donald Rothberg
We explore the nature of the judgmental mind, its differentiation from non-reactive discernment, and some sample judgments (using "judgments" here to refer to expressions of the judgmental mind), including judgments related to social conditioning. We outline the two main modes of transformation involved in our practice, a more direct transformation of judgments, on the one hand, and the cultivation of awakened qualities (particularly through heart practices), on the other.

Mindfulness is becoming very popular in many areas of modern life: as a stress reduction, in schools, prisons, hospitals, in the workplace and so on. Meditation Instructions to open us to the empty and fabricated nature of all phenomena. Everything is made up of other things. Everything is dividable into parts, components. All is put together: Sankhara. But, importantly, it is put together from put together things, there is no end to the parts exploration. There is no 'one' at the bottom of the pile. Everything is made up. Everything is empty of existing inherently individually seperately.
