Exploring Awareness: A Retreat for Experienced Practitioners

This retreat invites a direct exploration of awareness—not just as the faculty that knows experience, but as experience itself. Together, we’ll explore the felt sense of awareness as it reveals itself in body, heart, and mind. Our aspiration is to become more intimate with this innate capacity—not as concept, but as direct, embodied knowing that supports freedom in the midst of life.

The teachings support the development of inward staying—a grounded presence that is stable enough to receive each moment just as it is. This steadiness allows awareness to become more than a passing state—it becomes a refuge, a place from which we can meet experience without needing to manage or improve it. From this inner ground, insight unfolds naturally.

This retreat will be held in noble silence except for the guided meditations, talks, and practice support meetings. This retreat is not recommended for those experiencing acute mental or emotional challenges.

2026-06-08 Exploring Awareness Utilizing the Naturally Arising Practice Method (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 62:03
Alex Haley
This talk explores the Naturally Arising Practice Method (see dharmaground.org/teachings), which emphasizes softening into direct experience rather than forcing the mind. By establishing supportive conditions and maintaining curiosity, participants can learn to ground themselves in their own capacity for knowing, allowing insight and clarity to unfold more effortlessly.

2026-06-11 Resting in Spacious Knowing (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 65:07
Phillip Moffitt
This guided meditation establishes mindfulness through the Arriving Sequence (a part of the Naturally Arising Practice Method - dharmaground.org/teachings) before turning toward objects of experience. The practice then cultivates embodied knowing, sensing the space within and without, and eventually opens to the vastness of consciousness knowing space. This spacious knowing supports a freedom from grasping, allowing experience to pass through while remaining grounded in well-being.
2026-06-11 Fireside Chat on Awareness (Retreat at Spirit Rock) 67:13
Phillip Moffitt
In this talk, you are invited into a relaxed, fireside chat exploring awareness as the mind-heart’s capacity to know without grasping, fixing, or becoming entangled in what is known. Through reflections on aspects of the Naturally Arising Practice Method (dharmaground.org/teachings) including: inward-staying (from Upasika Kee Nanayon's pointer), knowing experience from within experience, and letting go of the mind’s habitual leaning toward objects, the talk points toward the fruits of stillness, coming home, wellbeing, equanimity, and joy. This exploration of awareness supports a more spacious and wise relatedness to daily life, where even difficulty can be met with greater presence, choice, and a quiet freedom.
