The First Foundation of Mindfulness

In the Satipatthana Sutta on the foundations of mindfulness, the first area of practice is the body. The Buddha gives us many different practices and ways to investigate the body. This talk explores these practices, beginning with the breath, but going on to other practices that we don't often teach, such as the four elements, the 32 parts of the body, and corpse contemplations. Each of these practices can be a powerful doorway to wise seeing and freedom. This talk is the first of a series of four on each foundation of mindfulness.

The sense of orientation is a requirement, and it brings up the sense of self. It generates relationally, in response to objects, others, memories, etc. Generally that “me” sense is a set of mental impressions, not something fixed or solid. In relational context, the theme then is to maintain a sense of presence, establish primary reference, and use the body to get a feeling for that.

The early Buddhist sangha included some accomplished and intriguing disciples--lay and monastic, male and female. By searching the literature of the Pali Canon, contemporary scholars have been able to compile biographical information, infer personality traits, and gain a vivid sense of the human relationships and life-stories that formed the earliest Buddhist community. This speaker series will explore the lives, practice, and teachings of several of the great disciples of the Buddha. The series will illuminate both the ordinary and extraordinary contributions of some of the most interesting personalities whose questions, challenges, and life situations shaped the teachings that we cherish today.

Not about Aldous Huxley's great books, but an exploration of the proximity of those disparate states of being; heavenly moments and hellish ones. Exploring how our reactions to the unfolding experience of life in a wise and kind manner shape what we see. Not offered as a panacea but as a compassionate response that brings intimacy and potential to all of our lives.

The Buddha spoke of the power of non-harming as a support for inner peace and outward harmony. But how can we both commit to being peaceful while courageously and passionately standing up for what we feel is right and make a difference in the world? This talk includes some of the Buddha's words on peace and non-harming as well as two clips of Julia Butterfly Hill speaking about "Anger v. Love" and "Fierce Compassion".
